On November 4th, Village Council members will begin debating whether the organizers of special events such as the 4th of July festivities, Annual Car Show, Fall Street Fair, Memorial and Veterans Day services, Ridgewood Run, and the Martin Luther King, Jr. Day march will be billed for all overtime worked by municipal employees required to facilitate these events.
During this week’s Village Council Work Session, Acting Village Manager Heather Mailander revealed that the Village incurred $53K in non-reimbursed municipal employee overtime charges for this year’s 4th of July parade and fireworks.
It is rumored that if the Village were to begin billing organizers for overtime incurred in connection with their respective events, many of the events could no longer be held.
Stay tuned folks. The last fireworks you saw in Ridgewood may indeed be the last, period!

Well since each of those events are for profit, I would imagine that the organizers will still be able to cover the additional costs without having to completely cancel. The post is a little "alarmist".
Since when is the MLK, Jr. Day march "for profit?"
yeti in this town they hung garbage on a Christmas tree and said that was OK , so I think the post should be a lot more "alarmist"
Let me clarify - "most events".
The July 4th fireworks will charge an extra $2 to cover OT, that doesn't spell the end of the show to me.
The street fair can easily pay for the OT - if they can charge me $5 to have my kid bounce in a bounce house for 5 minutes, they sure can afford to kick back to the town.
I heard that the VC is going to start charging school kids that ride their bicycles to school $6.00 a day to park their bikes at the bike rack to fund some events.
THIS IS A DAMN SHAME!!
The 4th of July Parade is one of the last shining jewels on the tarnished crown that IS Ridgewood. I am sorry but something is SERIOUSLY wrong if they are soaking the residents and retailers for every last penny they have and then pull this crap!!!
If they cancel the 4th of July Parade I am going to start petitioning the N.J. Attorney General's Office to investigate what the hell is going on at Village Hall because something is just not right. All indicators are showing that we are almost out of, if not totally out of the recession and yet our Village is still sinking!
Craig
VC - rethink the beer thing from AB and the Clydesdale Team. You can recoup 53k in a heartbeat!
how much do these workers get for over time !!!!!!????? I mean for goodness sake fifity three thousand dollars in one day for the fourth of july and plus the money just should be included as part of the budget or was it not for the past fifty years . This is really very upsetting!!!!!!!!
Garbage Tree, No 4th of July parade, a ghost town of a main street, idiotic constructivist math...
Just what makes Ridgewood special anymore?
Well, at least we still have the crown jewels of "Cultural All-a-day" and "Family Night" to be proud of...
2:17... I think it's "Ready, Set, Relax", not "Family NIght".
Ready Set Relax does not cost the town. It is counseling services and other agencies. No police OT and no roadblocks.
We must have a radically different calendar in VOR. A day of rest as observed by huge majority of people is once a week, not once a year.
Time magazine readers are still snickering:

I believe it is the Police overtime that incurred these charges. I don't think people making over a hundred thousand annually should receive any overtime! They make enough overtime thru traffic directing for PSE&G & Verizon.. Sitting on their a**s in their cars all day for about $75 per hour..
how can we complain about 53k and even consider a 15 million dollar bond to relace a pool we already have.!!!!!!!!! We as a community must look at the big picture. Cancel the 4th of july for 53k but spend 15 million, have we all lost our minds?
